Why are Effective Communication Skills important to me?

To a practical and realistic person like me, I tend to conform to social norms and I feel that one of the most important things that one has to be equipped with and to move on in life is to have effective communication skills. To some, they may feel that good communication skills merely mean conveying the message across to the other person successfully and that spells the end of the story. Somewhat like the telegraphic model of communication where there is basically just a sender and a receiver. However, there is still some form of an invisible barrier in between and there would be some kind of cold and hard feelings involved. Personally, I feel that the idea of having effective or good communication skills extend beyond just a mere sender/receiver relationship and even with the modified idea of a role reversal between the two. I believe that qualities like self development, interpersonal skills, mutual understanding, mutual cooperation and trust should be tied in with good speaking skills to complete the idea of having good communication skills.

Good communication skills plays an important role in various issues in life such as employment, relationships and even right down to simple matters like ordering a meal. Clear instructions have to be passed down to get the right order registered. Furthermore, effective communication skills are there for a reason- to assume the role of ‘police officers’ in maintaining law and order. Imagine a world without the use of effective communication, confusions and misunderstandings are bound to arise, which may lead to conflicts or even public disorder. Everything will be in a total mess! Hence, we can see the importance of having effective communication skills in life.

Firstly, the importance of good communication skills cannot be ignored in the context of working. These are the keys to executing excellent management skills and also adopting better presentation skills at work. With good management skills, there will be a team of members who can create an environment where there is open communication; instructions could be passed down effectively and most importantly, the idea of welfare like basically understanding the needs of the workers. Ultimately if you think for a second, having good communication between employers and employee is actually a win-win situation, work is done and the workers’ welfare is being taken care of. In my opinion, this will result in members working efficiently under immediate orders from the superior. No one would want to work under an employer who is not able to communicate with his subordinates properly and but just aim to achieve the targeted results at the end of the day. Trust me, it will be a mundane working experience!

Individually, as a working professional, with effective communication skills, one would be able to deliver his presentation in the best possible manner and thus would leave a good impression to the client. A well planned proposal is nothing without a good oral delivery to introduce the proposal. I am sure no one will want to leave a bad impression in front of his colleagues or boss for that matter.

Secondly, having good communication is definitely vital in relationships between couples and also between families. I personally have never been in a relationship but I have learnt one important fact that keeps relationships alive and that is having adequate and good communication among couples. One will agree that having effective communication skills will lead to a blissful love life between couples and strengthen familial ties between members of the family as there is mutual understanding amongst each other.  Poor or strained relationships are often victims of breakdown of communication between couples and also between families though there are factors to look upon which I am not going to cover here in my post.

On my part, I have been keeping up with having good communication skills. I begin to speak more confidently in front of people. This includes clear articulation, varied tone and also maintaining frequent eye contacts with others which I hardly did in the past. Despite the limitations of my vocabulary, I constantly seek for new avenues to upgrade myself. For that matter I have also started reading articles in order to brush up on the command of the language. I also started to keep a lookout on things happening around me like reading deeply into people’s thoughts.

All in all, effective communication skills do help improve prospects and ties for that matter and what it actually does is to break down barriers! Knowing what good promises good communication skills will offer me in future for my career and also my personal life, I will definitely hone my communication skills by speaking more confidently, learn to look from various points of view and be a better communicator in life! I believe that ES2007S will provide me with ample opportunities to develop my skills in this area and I am looking forward to what it has to offer me.. :D

Hi Sylvester!

I couldn't agree more with your point on how communication is vital in maintaining healthy relationships, be they of the romantic sort, familial, corporate, or platonic friendships. True too how strained relationships are often the result of communication breakdown between the parties involved. Guess a lot of time and effort has to be invested into establishing (and maintaining) good communication with the people who matter to you in life.

It was really inspiring to read about how you've actively been seeking new ways to develop your communication skills and how you've become more confident in public speaking. Taking up ES2007S this semester will undoubtedly serve to benefit you further in your commendable efforts towards self-improvement. Glad and honoured to be learning right alongside you!

This is an interesting post, Sylvester. I appreciate the fact that you mention lots of the less talked about life skills, for example, mutual cooperation and (engendering) trust. I also like the way your post so comprehensively addresses the value of effective comm skills in context like work, the family and romance. One minor problem though seems to be that you exceed 250 words. I haven't counted, but this must be nearly double that. Conciseness in writing is one of the skills that we will be aiming toward this term.

I also have a few suggestions for your language use:

1) Somewhat like the telegraphic model of communication where there is basically just a sender and a receiver. >>> sentence fragment

2) the idea of having effective or good communication skills extend... >>> the idea of having effective or good communication skills extendS....

3) who is not able to communicate with his subordinates properly and but just aim >>> who is not able to communicate with his subordinates properly but just aims

4) there is mutual understanding amongst each other. >>> there is mutual understanding between all members.

5) to keep a lookout >>> to observe (avoid colloquialisms)

6) All in all, effective communication skills do help improve prospects and ties for that matter and what it actually does is to break down barriers! >>>
To conclude, effective communication skills improve our social prospects by strengthening ties and eliminating barriers!

Thanks for your hard work!

Hi Sylvester,

I have worked for a project director who is not able to communicate with her subordinates (one of them is me) properly. I didn't like it when she assumed that I would work according to her procedures, without telling me clearly what she expects me to do, even though I have my own methods of doing it. Because of this, we had several misunderstandings.

I confronted her about the communication problems privately, as I suspected she has been working in that manner for at least a year. As a result, each cell director would work without any central coordination, & she would have to do everything herself at the eleventh hour. I told her that unless she changed the way she worked, she was going to overload herself, and this would be our last project together. (I initially thought the breakdown started with me, but this problem popped up in this committee only)

Hi Sylvester,

Personally, I like the wide range of topic regarding the importance of communication. I agree with you that effective communication is needed in most aspect of life.

Nonetheless, I feel that your essay is lacking personal touch. The essay is more general. I didn't really see much of the "to me" part. It would be a perfect essay for "why effective communication is important?"

Moreover, I feel that your development of the essay is not exactly coherence. I like the part of introduction which says effective communication is more than just conversation ".I believe that qualities like self development,... communication skills." However, I could not find the development of those ideas in the main body of the essay. May be it is because the number of words are limited. However, I feel that the introduction should reflect the main theme of the essay.

Apart from that, there are a few grammatical mistake which Brad has already pointed out. Nevertheless, this is a good effort on your part.

Great job. Looking forward to see you on Thursday. (:

Hi Sylvester,

After reading your post, other than being slightly lengthy, I feel that it provides a good summary on what effective communication is all about.

I like the way you talk about communication in the area of relationships. In a way, it made me reflect on the way I manage my relationships and an urgent need to improve on it.

Moving on, I disgree with what Billet said about the lack of development of ideas in the main body. When I read your paragraphs especially the middle sections, I can clearly see your topic sentences and examples to back your points. All in all, i feel your post is actually quite well substantiated.

Thanks everyone for giving me such constructive comments on improving the write up to my blog entry. I will bear those comments in mind and work hard on my blog posts in future. :D

@ Yuen May: I personally feel that mending ties and relationships dominates all other factors as it will result in greater happiness. To me, achieving happiness is the most important thing even it sacrifices personal stuff such as time and money.

@ Brad: Thanks for giving me such constructive comments on improving the write up to my blog entry. I will bear those comments in mind especially the issue of conciseness and some grammatical mistakes. With that, I will work hard on my blog posts in future. :D

@ Wy How: So what was the outcome of the problem? Was the matter peacefully solved?

@ Billet: Thanks a lot for your comments. I do agree that my essay lack some personal touch to it. I will work hard on my future blog posts. :D

@ Alvin: Thanks for the compliment you have made with regards to my blog entry.
