Dear Ms Li,
Application for Internship position
I am interested in applying for the internship position for the project title: Compatibility of Anionic Polymer in Cationic System that was listed through the National University of Singapore, Chemistry Department Career Service Office Website.
I am a year 2 chemistry undergraduate hoping to explore new avenues to further develop my interest in Chemistry, particularly in the area of surface chemistry. I have had a great deal of laboratory experience in Chemistry and Life Sciences in school. I have performed chemical reactions and learnt to operate several high precision instruments in the laboratories in NUS which include the UV-vis spectrophotometer and NMR spectroscopy. Precision and accuracy are the key principles that I adhere to when performing a laboratory experiment.
Despite not having any prior experience in research, I believe that my great interest in this study of surface chemistry and positive learning attitude will help me familiarize to the job scope quickly. I have always been intrigued by the fact how surface chemistry deals with the creation of new materials. To expand my horizons in the area of material synthesis, I am actually considering a specialization in surface chemistry. Under my assistance, I believe that I have the means and capability to bring Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry to greater heights. Thus, I am seeking to complement my interest in surface chemistry with a research internship in order to acquire the background necessary for a future career in scientific research.
With my keen passion in Chemistry, I believe that I would be an asset to your program. This internship would definitely provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist at your organization and to expand my research skills.
The enclosed resume shows my skills and achievements track record. I can be contacted at the following numbers indicated in the enclosed resume. If so, I hope to schedule an interview at a mutually convenient time. I look forward to speaking with you.
Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully Yours,
Sylvester Gabriel Lee Kwok Loong

Hi Sylvester,
First and foremost, I feel that your formatting is excellent. Your letter is very organized, with each paragraph explaining a new topic clearly. Through your letter, I am able to feel your interest on surface chemistry and the internship, which I feel is very important for any application letter.
However, there is this part of your letter in paragraph 3, "despite not having any prior experience in research". I feel that you should not write the negative aspects above yourself as it reflects badly on you.
7Cs-wise, I feel that you are lacking in correctness. There are some terms like "Year 2 Chemistry Undergraduate" and "Surface Chemistry", which I feel should not be capitalised. I also feel that you can increase the persuasive tone of the letter a little more. However, you are quite concise and complete, addressing the requirements of the internship well. (:
All the best! ((:

Hi Sylvester,
Your application letter matches very well with the internship you are applying to and is clear and concise. Good effort!
Things that can be improved, as Alicia said, you may want to improve the correctness of your letter, by not capitalizing “Chemistry” and other terms.
In addition, some parts of your letter are bold and make the format not so consistent and maybe you want to change this. Also, you may want to justify your letter to make it look more professional :)
Hi Sylvester,
This is another good example of a application letter that matches well with the requirements. The body(2nd & 3rd para) in particular has a lot going for it. Very relevant, interesting and original. I feel that an outside classroom activity involving chemistry(if any) would further supplement your interest level for the specialisation area you're interested in. Fantastic formatting as Alicia has already mentioned though you might want to add 'Ms' to Jennifer Li after the date section. The sophistication of vocabulary is appropriate in this context of an application letter as is the persuasion level except for one nagging point below.
The closing feels a little weird for me; 'I will contact you next week for any clarifications with regards to the position. If so, I hope to schedule an interview at a mutually convenient time.'. Naturally Ms Li would be the one calling you up and scheduling for an interview and also to clarify her doubts on your necessary qualifications. This gives a very 'pushy' feel for me personally. Maybe 'I am contactable at...' might be better? Feel free to disagree and share your point of view as its only a personal opinion and being new to this, I might be well wide off the mark on this point. That aside a few minor grammar errors to take note of,
- 'I am interested in applying for the scientific internship position for the project title' ---> position under the project title
- 'I believe that my great interest in this study of surface chemistry and positive learning attitude will help me familiarize to the job scope quickly' ---> familiarize with the job scope
- 'I have always been intrigued by the fact how Surface Chemistry deals with' ---> intrigued by how
That's about all I have. Seeya tomorrow!
Hi Sylvester,
Wow! What a technical job you are applying for! The letter is well-written with very relevant content and reasons why the reader should pick you as a candidate for interview. However, I think paragraph 3 is not very concrete. It is a statement which is not very well substantiated. You could tell them how you are very keen to learn in this topic like what books have you read out of the requirement of the syllabus? Or what seminar you have been to?
In organization, it is a well-organized letter with clear introduction and good introduction of new idea. Each idea is carried in a new paragraph. Topic sentence of each paragraph is clear. However, the link between each paragraph is not very clear. I feel that there's a jump from one paragraph to another.
Language-wise, a lot of people have corrected you on the grammatical mistakes. I agree with the changes. Nevertheless, the letter is concise and clear. It goes to the point and not long-winded. The uses of words are clear. There are not many vague vocabularies. Apart from the grammatical mistakes, the other components of language are well-written. Good job.
Cheers,
Billet
